Communication is a basic fundamental human right, and every single person deserves to be a part of the global community. However, those who are deaf or mute, communicate differently than everyone else. Sign language is very important for people who have hearing and speaking deficiency. The only mode of communication for such people to convey their messages is through gesture/sign language. Therefore, we come up with solution of this communication problem in form of “Development of Talking Hand” project. This is hardware and software combined project which make use of Arduino Nano, Bluetooth module, Android device, an adaptive Android application and other hardware components integrated to form complete project for deaf community. This project is useful for both the deaf and normal community, where the gestures sign given by the deaf person is transferred through Bluetooth device in the Android application, which shows recognized gesture in form of texts and audio. Also, this system promotes two-way communication via mobile application, where a normal person (having none or partial knowledge of Sign language) can talk to deaf by just speaking in his/her native language or English language. It helps to resolve the need of an interpreter or any Sign language translator or prior knowledge of sign language by normal person. Moreover, the android application of this project is user friendly, and provides facility of PSL/ASL/OSL gesture learning through picture gallery, videos and learning games. The system is evaluated by testing on the deaf people and results show 90% accuracy of gesture recognition through Sign Learning and Sign Recognition algorithms. The main objective of this project is to develop a reliable, easy to use, light weight and portable smart hand glove system which can minimize the obstacles for the hearing impaired. Furthermore, it provides a wide range of gesture memory/storage facility with less power or energy usage; thus, particularly it has no memory and power constraints.
